Not a Sonnet

"I dreamed I was a Shakespeare who couldn't write a sonnet."

I dreamed I was a saddler
who couldn’t ride a horse.
I dreamed I was a caddie
who couldn’t play the course.

I dreamed I was a sailor
who couldn’t sail the ocean.
I dreamed I was a witch
who couldn’t mix a potion.

I dreamed I was a glover
who couldn’t make a glove.
I dreamed I was a Don Juan
who couldn’t make love.

I dreamed I was a receptionist
who couldn't help being snooty.
I dreamed I was a gorgeous ghoul
who couldn't help being a beauty.

I dreamed I was a doctor
who couldn’t cure a cold.
I dreamed I was a Methuselah
who couldn’t grow old.

I dreamed I was an Einstein
who couldn’t count to ten.
I dreamed I was an alkie
who couldn’t say “When!”

I dreamed I was a butterfly
who couldn’t flit or flutter.
I dreamed I was a farmer's wife
who couldn’t churn butter.

I dreamed I was a Bo-Peep
who couldn't wear a bonnet.
I dreamed I was a Shakespeare
who couldn't write a sonnet.
